Lizardo received international attention for her self-portraits where she explores regionalism & displacement. 

 

Using multiple media has always been an important part of her work, which includes installations, antiquarian photography, drawings, paintings and multiple printmaking processes. 

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Carmen Lizardo was born in La Romana, Dominican Republic, in 1970. She attended college at Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra, where she studied Computer Science.

 

Lizardo immigrated to the United States when she was nineteen years old, settling in Brooklyn, New York. She worked as a computer programmer for a year and decided to go to art school after. She received a BFA and Later an MFA from Pratt Institute.

 

While her degrees are in Photography and Digital art, using multiple media has always been an important part of her work, which includes installations, antiquarian photography, drawings, paintings and multiple printmaking processes. Lizardo received international attention early on for her self-portraits where she explores regionalism, displacement and disenfranchisement and the consequence of melding, hybridizing while preserving aspects of otherness. 

 

Carmen Lizardo currently lives and works in Hudson Valley, New York.
